Why Your Caribbean Vacation Needs Less Planning and More Patience

After a decade of island-hopping from St. Barts to Grenada, I’ve learned that the secret to the Caribbean isn't in the itinerary, but in letting go of the one you tried to write.

My friend Liz and I once spent four hours waiting for a shared taxi in St. Lucia. We had just touched down at Hewanorra, the mid-afternoon heat was shimmering off the tarmac, and our pristine schedule—written in a crisp, leather-bound notebook—had us eating conch fritters at a beach shack in Soufrière by 3:00 PM. We missed the fritters. We missed the golden hour light we’d spent weeks obsessing over. We were, by all accounts, having a terrible time.

That was trip number two. By trip number twenty, we learned that the Caribbean doesn’t care about your plans. It doesn’t care about your reservations or your carefully curated list of "must-see" viewpoints. It moves to the rhythm of the tide, the arrival of the supply boat, and the inevitable, sudden afternoon squall. If you arrive expecting the seamless efficiency of a Swiss train station, you are setting yourself up for heartbreak. The magic of the islands isn't found in a checklist; it’s found in the surrender.
