The Art of the Island Pivot: Why You Should Skip St. Barts for Vis

When the price of admission to famous shores outweighs the experience, it is time to look at the map with fresh eyes and a lighter suitcase.

There is a particular kind of heartbreak that comes with the "Instagram Tax." You know the feeling: you’ve spent months fantasizing about a specific shade of cerulean water, scrolling through feeds of influencers posing on pristine sands, only to arrive and find that the reality is significantly more crowded, and exponentially more expensive, than the brochure promised.

Last July, I found myself in one of those "it" destinations, nursing a $22 Aperol Spritz in a plastic cup while fighting for a sliver of shade on a beach that felt more like a subway platform. I was paying a premium not for the quality of the gin or the comfort of the lounge chair, but for the zip code. I was paying for the privilege of saying I was *there*. And frankly, it left a sour taste in my mouth that no amount of citrus could mask.

The travel industry thrives on the scarcity mindset. We are told that there is only one place to be, one beach to photograph, one marina to dock your charter in. But as someone who spends her life moving through airport terminals and ferry ports, I have learned the great secret of the savvy traveler: the magic is rarely where the crowds are. The magic is in the pivot.
