Chiemsee Is the Shimmering Alpine Lake That Makes the Munich–Vienna Drive Worth Taking Slow

Halfway between two capitals, a Bavarian lake with a mad king's palace, steaming thermal pools, and a wall of snow-dusted peaks turns a highway chore into the actual trip.

I have driven the A8 between Munich and Salzburg more times than I can count, and for years I did exactly what everyone does: set the cruise control, let the Bavarian countryside blur into a green smear, and treated the whole stretch as dead time between two more interesting cities. Then a delayed flight forced an overnight stop near a lake I'd only ever glimpsed from the highway, and I understood how badly I'd been doing this drive.

Chiemsee sits less than an hour east of Munich, close enough that it barely requires a detour, yet it has the scale and drama of somewhere you'd fly to. Bavaria's largest lake spreads out beneath the first serious peaks of the Chiemgau Alps, its water doing that improbable shifting thing, pewter at dawn, glass-green by noon, streaked gold when the evening light comes in low over the mountains. There's a reason the Wittelsbachs chose this spot when Ludwig II wanted somewhere to build his version of Versailles. Fairy tale is the correct word, and for once the headline writers undersold it.
