The Shift in the Wind

There is a distinct, unsettling frequency to the travel news lately. It arrives in flickering clips on our phones: the smoke rising from a French town hall, the shattered glass in a Milanese square, the sheer, frantic energy of crowds pushing against the barriers of iconic sights. For years, we have equated "the trip of a lifetime" with the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum, or the canals of Venice. But lately, when I sit down to plan my own getaways, those crowded corridors feel less like adventure and more like a logistical battleground.

We travel to escape the noise of our daily lives, yet we are increasingly flocking to places that amplify it. We are paying a premium to stand in hour-long queues, to dodge pickpockets in crowded piazzas, and to dine at restaurants that stopped caring about the quality of their patatas bravas somewhere around 2014.
