I arrived in Milan the way most people do, thinking of it as a layover city—a place you pass through en route to Lake Como or the Cinque Terre, somewhere to kill an afternoon between a fashion week fitting and a flight. I left, four days later, having barely glimpsed the Duomo, because I had fallen into something far more consuming: the city's drinking culture, which turns out to be one of the most sophisticated and quietly confident in the world.
This is not news to Milanese. For decades, this has been a city that treats the hour before dinner as sacred, a ritual with its own choreography, its own bitter-sweet vocabulary of Campari and vermouth and soda water. What's new is that the rest of us have noticed. When one of the city's bars was recently crowned the second-best in the entire world, it wasn't a fluke or a one-off coronation. It was an overdue acknowledgment of something Milan has been quietly building since the days when Gaspare Campari first stirred his ruby-red bitter behind a counter in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a few steps from where that glass-domed arcade still glitters today.
What this means, practically, for anyone planning a trip, is that Milan has shifted from a stopover to a destination in its own right—at least for a few nights. You no longer need an excuse to go. The cocktails are the excuse.
