Key facts
- Destination: Mercantour, France
- Base yourself in Saint-Martin-Vésubie or Entraunes to access trailheads from both sides without long transfers
- Hike Lac d'Allos early morning in July or August before day-trippers arrive from the coast
- Carry cash and a paper map, as mobile signal disappears fast once you climb above the valley floors

There is a particular kind of quiet that exists only above the treeline, in that thin band of air where the rock turns the color of old bone and the lakes go a blue so saturated it looks corrected in post. I found it in the Mercantour, in the high country where France finally runs out and Italy begins, somewhere in the tangled ridgelines above Nice that almost nobody outside the region seems to know by name.
This is not the Alps of gondolas and glass-walled restaurants. It is the Alps before someone thought to monetize the view, and that absence is precisely the point.
