Mont Blanc was nowhere to be seen on my first morning in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains. The massif sat behind a wall of cloud the color of wet slate, and the funicular station below Mont d'Arbois looked abandoned, its summer flower boxes gone leggy and spent. I'd come expecting the postcard view, the one every brochure promises, and instead I got something better: a town exhaling after the crowds, settling into the quiet pause between seasons.

This is the gift of early autumn in the Haute-Savoie. The ski lifts haven't started turning, the summer hikers have mostly gone home, and the whole valley feels like it belongs to whoever's left. Saint-Gervais, tucked into a fold of the mountains about an hour from Chamonix, has always traded on its thermal waters rather than its slopes alone. The Romans knew about the springs here, though it was the Belle Époque crowd who really put the place on the map, arriving by train to take the cure in their layered wool and parasols.
