The Coziest Fall Towns Are Real—Just Don't Drive Into Them Like Everyone Else

The leaves are real, the fireplaces are real, but the six-hour crawl behind a rental SUV doesn't have to be.

Key facts

  • Destination: Woodstock
  • Book your fireplace room before you book your flight—these ten rooms per inn sell out by Labor Day
  • Arrive Thursday night or leave Monday morning to dodge the 70-mile backup at peak leaf season
  • Pick one town and walk it, rather than chasing foliage across three states in a weekend

Every October, a particular fantasy gets sold to American travelers: a two-lane road, a canopy of gold and crimson, a thermos of coffee, and absolutely no one else on earth who had the same idea. It is, of course, a lie we tell ourselves every single year, and every single year we believe it again until we're parked on Route 100 outside Stowe, Vermont, watching a stranger's brake lights for the better part of an afternoon.

I don't say this to talk anyone out of a fall weekend away. I say it because the towns being celebrated right now for their walkable downtowns and wood-fired hearths deserve to be visited well, not endured. The difference between a magical weekend and a miserable one usually comes down to logistics nobody mentions in the glossy roundups.
