A Morning Ritual
The light in Paris is rarely white; it is usually a sort of bruised gold, especially at eight in the morning when the city is still shaking off the night. I found myself in the 11th arrondissement, sitting on a spindly wire chair outside a café near the Rue de Charonne. My espresso was dark and scorched in that delicious, uncompromising French way, and the man at the table beside me was reading Le Monde with the kind of focus usually reserved for surgery. No one was rushing. No one was checking their phone. The rhythm of Paris isn't found in the frantic climb up the steps of Sacré-Cœur, but in these quiet, granular moments of stillness.
Paris is a city of layers, and the mistake most visitors make is trying to peel them all off in a single weekend. They sprint from the Louvre to the Arc de Triomphe, breathless and blurred, viewing the city as a checklist rather than a living, breathing entity. To actually see Paris, you have to lean into its contradictions. You have to be willing to spend three hours eating lunch because the conversation at the next table is too good to ignore, and you have to be comfortable with the fact that the waiter might not care if you ever finish your wine.
